Review of Lucy's appearance on the Late Late Late Show
Lucy came out wearing a grey pants suit which looked fabulous. She looked tanned and relaxed. A very happy Lucy.

They talked about Xena and showed a clip from Amphipolis Under Seige where Xena teaches Athena's archers a thing or two and a little about Xena's history. Lucy said she was crucified 5 times and she said she would rather go through labour again than get crucified. They then talked about about the doco and Grace O'Malley (The Pirate Queen) which was interesting. They also discussed Lucy's Irish roots and she revealed that the Ryans were really the Walshes. She had some family there but wouldn't reveal where (smart Lucy).

The bit that really made me go awwww is Lucy revealing that Rob caught Julius kissing a Xena magnet on the fridge and that Julius really missed her :) That's so sweet and Lucy missing all of them.

She's off to Prague after Ireland to film The Ugly Americans and then back home.

Lucy looked spectacular and was her usual charming self. The Warrior Women documentary will out in September.

Seems Lucy has already gone to France for the Discovery Doco Warrior Women. She was photographed on a gorgeous white horse - and looks absolutely gorgeous. The pictures are on the Centre de Tourisme équestre " La Landelle ... "La Landelle" lies between Baugé and Saumur at the crossroads of the forests of Chandelais and Monnaie.  Here, horse lovers, whether beginners or experienced riders, can go for rides in small groups of up to 6 people, according to level, in complete safety. The Centre also offers lessons for beginners in the school, courses for all levels and can arrange for French Equestrian Federation (FFE) exams to be taken.  There are also one or two-day rides which will allow you to discover the countryside around Baugé and the Loire Valley. • The following is from The Western Leader newspaper in NZ:
'Xena' may battle her way on to walk of fame
Lucy Lawless, who brought fame to Waitakere City through her exploits as Xena: Warrior Princess, is on the short list for one of the city's highest honours. The actress is one of four famous people short-listed for a spot on Henderson's Walkway of Fame at Catherine Mall...They must have lived, or been born in Waitakere City or contributed significantly to its success.  Ms Lawless is credited with helping put the city on the world stage as the dynamic, no-nonsense star of Xena, which was largely filmed on the city's west coast.

More on the public outcry over the name change to Starship Hospital and Lucy's involvement

  • Actor Lucy Lawless, a trustee on the fundraising Starship Foundation , called the change a "nonsense" she hoped could be reversed.
    NZ Herald - 28 April 2003
  • Actor and foundation trustee Lucy Lawless also expressed surprise at hearing of the amended name from the media rather than the board. "I think the public, who feel a great amount of ownership over the hospital, have sent a message loud and clear - 'hands off, leave the name alone'."
    NZ Herald - 29 April 2003
  • Lucy Lawless, a trustee of the fundraising Starship Foundation and the most famous person associated with the hospital, has called the change a nonsense. "The place will always be, in people's hearts, the Starship. Visually, that's what it looks like, so why strip it of official recognition?"  She and other trustees were to discuss the implications at a regular meeting at the hospital today. Ms Lawless believed it would be harder to raise money for something "that sounds like something from the socialist era".
    Manawatu Standard - 28 April 2003

That top looks familiar <g>

Lucy was on the Holmes Show in NZ yesterday discussing the change in the name for The Starship Hospital. It was originally going to be renamed Auckland City Hospital Children's Services. The board did a backflip after a huge backlash from people including Lucy. They are now putting back the name Starship into the name of the hospital but now calling it The Starship Children's Department (!!!).

6 April

A few years ago Lucy leant her voice to the Simpsons in the episode "Tree House of Horror". Word is out now that there will be a Xena/Lucy action figure in the Simpson range. I received this note about the action figure:

Playmates is a company who produce the "Simpsons" collectible figurines. When Lucy Lawess first appeared on the Simpsons in a Halloween episode many fans including myself requested that Playmates make an action figure of Lucy Lawless as the cartoon Xena. And playmates have agreed! To be released in August/September 2003 is "The Collector's Lair" a rather big playset based on the scene from the episode where Bart and Lisa attempt to rescue Lucy Lawless from "The Collector". It will include figures of The Comic Book Guy as "The Collector", Lisa Simpson as "Clobber Girl", Bary Simpson as "Stretch Dude" and of course Lucy Lawless as herself in her Xena outfit. Playmates also usually make these things with voice interaction, so the Lucy Lawless figure may also feature recordings of some of her lines from this episode. It is apparently some sort of exclusive playset that will only be released to certain retailers, which may mean it will be hard to get (especially in Australia) and will probably be pretty costly. At the moment there is only concept art available at some of the Simpson action figure sites.
Many thanks to Adam for the information

  • Added transcript from Ireland on Sunday newspaper on "Grainne Mhaol"  (Grace O'Malley)
  • Updated two new links for information on Grace O'Malley the Pirate Queen
  • Added information about books available on Lozen, Apache Warrior (one of the warrior women featured in the documentary:
Book - Ghost Warrior Ghost Warrior by Lucia St. Clair Robson
The heroine, Lozen, is a fierce Apache woman who would rather be a warrior than a wife, a departure from Apache conventions. Lozen can see enemies in the future, a skill that allows her to ride with the likes of Cochise, Geronimo, Mangas Coloradas and her brother, Victorio. One white man who escapes Lozen's wrath is Rafe Collins, a Shakespeare-reciting teamster who weaves in and out of this tale, offering the white man's perspective. Lozen and Rafe meet frequently, but a tender moment of hesitation always keeps them from slaughtering each other.
  • Added information about books available on Grace O'Malley - The Pirate Queen
Book - The Pirate Queen by Emily Arnold McCully
Born in 1530, Grania O'Malley took to the sea as a child, learning her father's trade of seafaring (and piracy) and saving his life in a battle with English buccaneers. She later married, had children, led her own ships, and built her own kingdom in Clew Bay. Captured and released by the English, she traveled to London, met Queen Elizabeth, and formed an alliance that granted Grania the right to her lands and "to defend the Crown with fire and sword." Rich with color and the effects of light on seascapes, landscapes, and people, the artwork makes the most of the story's dramatic content. Children intrigued by pirates will enjoy McCully's unusual picture book, which offers some insight into the history behind the legend and illuminates more than the life of Grania O'Malley.
Book - Granuaile: The Life and Times of Grace O'Malley 1503-1603 by Anne Chambers
Using state papers and manuscripts of the period, Anne Chambers reveals the woman behind the legend and presents one of history's most remarkable women against the turbulent political environment of her time. What emerges is a woman who challenges our predisposed sense of convention, who, over four hundred years ago, was one of the first women to break the mold and make a unique contribution to history

More on Lucy's singing gig at the NZ Pre-Oscars bash in LA.
I received a note from Anne who was at the event and took video footage of the event (this is not a bootleg copy - they were permitted to film). The following is Anne's note about the screengrabs and the video which will be available for sale:

"They are actually screengrabs from a digital video. I will be offering the video for sale and I want to make it clear that it is not a bootleg video. Video taping and photography were _not_ prohibited that evening. It was more like a party - Lucy even looks right in my camera, smiles and gives me 2 V signs at the end of the video. This is much the same as the video that Kiwi Attic has for sale of Lucy & Daves summer tour.  The video includes footage of Lucy & Rob going up onstage to get an award - tho there was a glitch and they didn't have the award there, so the presenter offers them his tie and best wishes - saucy Lucy undoes his tie and makes off with it!

There are also two brief bits of Lucy & Renee talking to the press.

The music part includes Lucy singing Maxine & Brass In Pocket solo, then singing 8 songs with Dave Dobbyn.  I was sitting in a front row table for most of the shoot, so I was very close to the stage.

The following is from Missy about the support letters:

Just wanted to say thanks to those who have already sent in letters of comment and support for Lucy, Rob, and the rest of the Xena team. - I received over fifty today, from many different countries and many different facets of Xena fandom. Some of them were FIN lovers, some FIN
haters, some of them were Gabrielle fans, some Xena fans, and some were people who just loved watching the show and missed it. Keep them coming!

27 February

I'm really chuffed to see the support coming together for Lucy and Rob. I've been asked about my comments a few days ago and why the support is needed...

Lucy has been subjected to vitriol, stalkers, hate mail for her portrayal of Xena from Season 3 to Season 6 - it appears through the Metro Magazine interview that Season 6 was especially vicious. Long time fans would remember the SUSA netforum and the absolute hatred and vitriol that spewed forward from that forum; as I said it was VILE. I won't go into the chronicle of abuse that originated on that forum but this hate mail didn't start after FIN aired when everyone was especially upset but it had it's beginnings with Season 3 and the rift. It continued on throughout Season 3, Season 4, Season 5 and Season 6. Season 6 had it's own special brand of ickiness. This is from what I saw on the net; Lucy had another view of it because she was the intended target. Imagine yourself in her position.

Why do we need to support Lucy? Can't she take care of herself and "get over it"? All of us need encouragement and support. Lucy isn't any different and neither is Rob. You may disagree with FIN (which I do) and you may think the ended the show on a bad note but nothing warrants being attacked like Lucy and Rob have. Not over a TV show. When it boils down to brass tacks -  it's a TV show. Xena is not real and is a fictional character. Real people die, fictional characters don't.

That said I know how hurt I was by the end of the show and it affected me deeply - we have all  invested emotionally in this show and thus the end was a double blow: the show ending and our heroes ending on a bad note. No one is saying that your feelings are wrong but the vitriol and the angst directed at Rob and Lucy has to end. I'm not naive to believe it will but a little moral support for Lucy and Rob would be cool. You can still dislike FIN and that is your right but think of the six glorious years that we had; the absolutely wonderful performances by Lucy and Renee. No other show had two leading ladies who were absolutely MAGIC together.

Now I wasn't aware yesterday (thanks Kat) that Missy had offered to forward emails and snail mail for anyone who wishes to send them to her and that's is majorly cool of her to offer (I fear for her poor postman <g>)

If you are overseas  and would like to send a snail mail instead of email you can send them to Missy at 625 NW 170th Terrace, Pembroke Pines, FL 33028, USA. If it's a letter, you can send it as a doc file to Missy at merwolf@bellsouth.net and she will print it out and forward it on (thus saving the cost of sending it airmail or taking forever and 10 days (thus the term snail mail) If it's a card, send it to the address listed above. If you are in the US and want to send a card/letter just send it to the address above. If you prefer email - forward it to Missy's addy.

Just so you know: Missy will read the emails/letters/cards to ensure that no one tries anything silly.

This was supposed to be a short note...apologies for the length.

26 February

Something quite positive has come from the interview that Lucy did for  Metro Magazine - fans are rallying to her support (yeay!). If you would like to pass on your support to Lucy you can email Sharon Delaney at outback@creationent.com and she will pass them on to Lucy. Lucy has heard from the vocal minority - it's time for the vocal MAJORITY to get into action.

24 February

Okay folks this is way too funny but I'm going to post what Mesh and Bev got back from the Sony Exec about the Dave Dobbyn CD with Lucy Names will be collected and sent to JP Hansen instead of everyone spamming JP Hansen <g>

Hi,

I will advise our managers & A&R department of the interest shown in the Dave Dobbyn live CD from the Lucy Lawless fans. You do realise that Lucy only sang 3 songs on that tour with Dave?

Can you please instruct everyone to stop spamming me with CD requests now? A better idea would to have been to gather the names, and just send me the one email showing your interest.

Also, are you aware you can already get Mrs Lawless singing voice on CD, as part of the Children's Book / Songs on "The Underwater Melon Man"?

Lucy's in the news again in New Zealand. Metro Magazine has a feature on Lucy. Metro - March 2003 - Lucy A Go Go, Ms Lawless and The Lure of Hollywood.

This was a MONSTER of an article (set out in 2 pages with scans of the photos in the article) to transcribe but IMO it's worth it. This interview goes from fun Lucy had on the Singing Tour with Dave Dobbyn to some very serious stuff about her personal safety, her life during Season 6 and the idiots in this fandom that were vicious in their condemnation of Lucy and Rob. It was disgraceful the way they were treated by some fans - the vocal minority - and it hurt Lucy and her opinion of Xena fans. This fandom has produced some truly remarkable stuff - the charity work being one of them. But it also created a seedy underbelly which was truly revolting to watch.

This is one of the best interviews/articles on Lucy I have read in all my time doing this site. it's insightful, informative and it sheds light on who Lucy is, what she wants and her past. Don't judge this interview based on the amusing cover - it's very indepth and the best interview/article on Lucy.

Lana Clarkson, who was found shot to death in Phil Spector's foyer this week, from Friday to Sunday she was scheduled to appear at a national Xena convention in Pasadena, a throw-in pseudo-celeb at an event that featured the real Xena, Lucy Lawless. The show may be off the air, but "Xena: Warrior Princess" star Lucy Lawless, 34, still attracts a crowd, as evidenced by the estimated 5,000 fans who showed up to hear a lecture by Lawless at a weekend Xena convention in Southern California, reports the Associated Press. Appearing with Lawless Saturday evening was Renee O'Connor, who played Xena sidekick Gabrielle. During the day, groups of mostly young and middle-aged women mingled around tables of "Xena" merchandise, scripts and autographed pictures.

Lucy Holiday Singing Tour with Dave Dobbyn

  • This is from ILS (IloveSydney33) "I am a big XWP fan from Germany. I recently visited the beautiful country NZ and had the great luck to see Lucy live in concert. I send you some (many) pics (I took) of the concert in Auckland and Waiheke.

WARRIORS ON TOUR: She may be best-known to millions as Xena the Warrior Princess. But actress Lucy Lawless, who recently undertook a 15-- date tour of New Zealand with local music icon Dave Dobbyn, says she has long been a frustrated singer. "I don't want to be kicking myself as an old lady, saying, 'I coulda, shoulda, woulda,'" she says. "It doesn't matter if I go down in flames, as long as I had a crack at it." Lawless joined Dobbyn on his annual tour over the Christmas and new year period, performing backup and singing lead on such covers as "Brass in Pocket" and "Oliver's Army." Dobbyn's profile is currently high in New Zealand, as his 1988 hit "Loyal" has become the anthem of the New Zealand America's Cup defenders. Several shows were recorded, and Dobbyn's management say that a live album is a possibility. Global music pulse. , Billboard, 02-01-2003, pp 55.

Lucy Holiday Singing Tour with Dave Dobbyn

The following is from Waiheke Marketplace Online
Yes, our Zena can sing. Of course the Americans know that already, having seen her on stage in Grease, but Waihekeans were pleasantly surprised by Lucy Lawless's performance as Dave Dobbyn's 'Special Guest Vocalist' on his Summer Holiday Tour last weekend.

  • The following is from Leanne at Kiwi Attic
As you know I went to a second concert in Palmerston North of the Dave and Lucy Summer Tour, and this time took my video camera along.  Managed to get a few songs and would be happy to make this available for those interested. My main interest in this email though is to find out what form people would be most interested in purchasing these in.  Since my video-guy left, I've been sourcing a new person and as it turns out both are in another town (which means a small delay in copying time).  I have a couple of options however, and all depend on quantities ordered at the time, also there is the option of putting the footage onto a VCD, playable on your computer or DVD player. It turns out that the new NTSC dubbing costs are likely to be around US$22 per VHS tape + shipping, whereas the VCD would be around US$15 + shipping.  Shipping costs are not yet confirmed, but the VCD would definitely be the cheaper option.  I haven't seen the quality yet and am waiting to see this before making any further decisions - but I would be more interested in what you guys think about this...........is a VCD more preferable, or just stick with the VHS tape?  If you have the time to let me know, I'd love to hear from you soon.
    Kindest Regards

  • There is a small mention of Lucy and the cult status of Xena in an article in the Mumbai Newsline - Powerpuff women of Planet television
Mumbai, January 12: MULTIPLY the effect of saas-bahu and Ally McBeals on women several times over to figure out the effect that superwomen have on the not-so-fair sex. Yes, we’re talking Alias, Black Scorpion, Dark Angel and La Femme Nikita. Though none of these women have managed to recreate the Lucy Lawless euphoria, with an entire cult following for Xena: The Warrior Princess, they’ve not done too badly for themselves.

Added link to article about how Kiwis handle Superstars in their midst.

Part of the article (the important part about Lucy)
Lawless, as uber-star Xena Warrior Princess, has experienced fan worship globally - how do Kiwis compare? "I think (in the US) they are better at whipping people into a frenzy," she says. "But when you meet people one-on-one they're not much different to here. It's just a human reaction. Over there people are rarked up ahead of time so you might get treated like a superstar for 15 minutes between the car and the door, but after that, well everyone is different. They either overcompensate for the way they feel and are incredibly sycophantic or incredibly brusque in order to prove they don't think you're superior."

Kiwis may be more relaxed about their stars, says Lawless - more likely to say to a tourist "yep, that's Lucy's house down there. Go and give her a knock. She won't mind."

But, says Lawless, "she absolutely does mind. Go away".

However, since performing with Dobbyn, a New Zealand musical icon and all round nice guy, Lawless says the public has been much warmer with her.

"After Wellington a couple of people came up in a bar and said OI really liked your performance' and that's all they wanted to say, that I did a good job, and that's awfully nice. When New Zealanders do come up it might have taken a bit more effort for them to make that move."

Lucy News Archive

Added scans of Lucy article from the Lesbian News magazine

From the Lesbian News article Lucy thinks there MIGHT be a movie and would like to see it in the present day, fighting wrongs in New York.

"Despite the apparent final ending of Xena and the series, Lawless assures her fans that if there is a way to resurrect the character, she and Tapert will do so. "The ol' girl aint dead yet," she says "Of course there is a way for her to come back. My husband loves Xena so much and he's the leading proponet of Xena sequels and prequels and blah, blah. He would love to do that so much."

She's open to reprising the character and hopes to do so within the next three years because she's not sure she wants to be running around in that Xena outfit when she's 40. This time, though, she would like to see Xena on the big screen and in a modern day setting. "I would like to see Xena and Gabrielle running about in modern day New York," she says "There's a lot of trouble these days for super heroes to solve. I think there's a real sense of people wanting a hero at the moment. It could be a slightly lighthearted way to have a bit of escapism and something's that gonna make you feel like the world's gonna be OK. We always wanted the show to be about the triumph of good and ultimately that the good stuff wins out. We're all drawn to that, we all want to believe that, especially these days."

Lucy reveals that Xena and Gabrielle were lovers <g> and that Lucy figured it out during FIN (while subtext fans figured it out in Season 1 and even Renee revealed in an interview that it was "all about the love".) Lucy wasn't sure until FIN and introducing Gabrielle to Akemi (boo hiss) as her soulmate. Akemi was useful for one thing at least (and here I thought she was the most useless character usurping Ulysses for that award).

There is a posibility of a Lucy sitcom in the works (half an hour) and could appear in the 2003 Fall lineup. According the the interview: "Lawless is in Los Angeles working with writers and network executives on a new television program. This time she wants to try a half hour sitcom Although she refuses to name the network, she admits to having enough backing that the show could appear in the Fall 2003 lineup.

Many thanks to Wendy the Warrior Princess for the scans.

Lucy Articles/Interviews

  • Lesbian News has an exclusive interivew with Lucy (and a great cover) - part of the interview can be found on their site. Lucy has some VERY interesting things to say about Xena.
Part of the article reads: ...as our heroines shared one last, dripping kiss, we thought that certainly they had just proven their lesbian love on national television for the world to see. And yet, when Xena, the Warrior Princess and her comrade, Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), ended their reign on the small screen, we still weren't completely sure about the full nature of their relationship. Until now...click here to read more of the article
