Good News / Bad News for Aussies and Kiwis

After a long delay of not getting word about whether Season 4 to 6 will be released in Australia on DVD, I've received word today from Dave that Seasons 4, 5 and 6 will be released on 28 July 2004 for Australia and New Zealand (Region 4) - each season will be a six disc boxset similar to Seasons 1 to 3. Unfortunately, it seems that we won't be getting any of the extras that Region 1 is getting - just the episodes. Bummer.

more about the Season 4 DVD Extras....
I received a note from Bret Rudnick, Director, HERC/XENA DVD Extra material, in Auckland, New Zealand with more info about the Season 4 DVD and the extras:

Just to let you know, the inventory of what you listed regarding the
interview/commentary content of the XENA Season 4 DVD set is not
complete.  What is listed only includes the footage that was shot in Los
Angeles, not what we shot in Auckland, which would add significantly to
the content.  Although I directed the Auckland shoots, I don't have the
authority to say what the final content will be because that is still
being determined.  Yes we had a list of what was wanted for each episode
of Season 4, 5, and 6, but until the final layout is complete and
editing is finished, we don't know what the final content will be and I
wouldn't want to give false hope to people who were counting on a
particular item making the "final" list and then have it cut for time.
Given the volume of footage shot, some of it will certainly not make the
final cut.  You'll get the "best" of what's available, but I know XENA
and HERC die-hard mega-fans are like sponges and will absorb as much
material as possible!  But at the moment, I don't know what the final
answer is.

More on the Best Buy Online Vs Store Bought Season 3 DVD sets

The following is from Iseqween

I ordered online.  I'd opened the set, as well as the envelope with the CD.  I called BB customer service and said I had not received what I expected, based on BB's claim that it had exclusive material.  I said the info on their online site was irrelevant, that they had advertised on the internet the "exlusive bonus content" with no suggestion whatsoever that pre-ordering would actually be a disadvantage.  The customer service rep said I could take the set back to a store.  I did.  I showed them the difference between what I'd received and what was in the store.  They said they'd send a credit notice to my card company.  I then purchased the bonus version. 

Make sure that the  front cover of the box has a violet-colored strip at the top that says "Exclusive Bonus Content -- All New Interviews With Cast and Crew."  On the back cover, the first bullet under "Features" will refer to the exclusive material.   The extra 30 minutes cover the whole third season, XWP's origins and how the "rift" came about.  There are quick bits from Lucy, Renee, Sears, Hudson, and other key Xenastaff.  Some comments are repeated on other commentaries.  The new stuff is interesting, but probably won't be a big surprise to long-term fans.

When I went online a few hours after returning the set, I had the following note from BB:

"We have received the items you returned on 02/12/2004. Your return details are listed below.

Our records indicate that this item was returned because the product did not meet expectations. Your credit card and any Digital Dollars used for this purchase have been credited. " 

Also from Laurie Ann:

Suncoast was once affiliated with Best Buy.  But have since been sold.  They do not
have the extra bonus DVD.

For those that have bought the Season 3 DVD Set from Best Buy ONLINE please check your box to see if you have received the bonus 30 minute directors / cast interview. The box should have a purple banner stating it has exclusive material.

I've been told that this 30 minute bonus is NOT included in the sets ordered online. If you went into the store and bought the set, it will have the bonus item.
If you bought the online version and you don't have the bonus item DO NOT OPEN the package. If you have a store nearby go into the store for an exchange.

The Detroit Free Press - 10 February 2004 has a small mention of the release of Season 3 for Region 1

The week's big TV box is "Xena Warrior Princess -- Season Three" (THREE STARS out of four stars, Anchor Bay, $69.98), a 9-disc affair collecting the entire season of this campy action-fantasy series starring Lucy Lawless, and produced by former suburban Detroiters Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, scored by present suburban Detroiter Joe LoDuca, and featuring that other Raimi brother Ted in a very special dual role in the fan- favorite episode "The King of Assassins."

The Xena package (Anchor Bay, 22 episodes, 8 discs, $69.98) also included print pitches for things like commemorative Xena coins and a coin holder, and no informational booklet. But as with previous sets, it's a beautiful presentation, containing a separate CD-ROM of extras along with commentaries and introductory segments to episodes and a blooper reel. And the audio is fabulous.

Season 2 is out and the picture is fantastic. Okay it seems the version at Best Buy has a 30 minute interview with Lucy & Renee. It's only available at Best Buy - why? Who knows. The bad thing about Best Buy is that they don't ship outside the US. For those not in the US - you can buy it from Amazon.com
 

Now here's a way for your voice to be heard - Kym Taborn is taking your suggestions about what you want to see in the Season 3 DVD release - ie interviews, commentaries etc. to give to Anchor Bay for the next release. They really want to know what the fans would like to see which is pretty cool. So if you have a suggestion email Kym.

Marion Texas: I've very much enjoyed the commentary (yours, Rob Tapert's, Renee' O'Connor's) on the S2 DVD. Are there plans to do that on future DVDs?

Lucy Lawless: Yes, there are. I find it very useful to have Rob there, because he has a completely different take on things, and he was able to spark us off in new ways, with new insights and things we hadn't thought of before. He made it more interesting for both of us. We were a little played out talking about the show until Rob came in, and Renee and I felt it got a lot more interesting all of a sudden.

An update on the news about the commentary for Season 1 episodes by Lucy, Renee & Rob. Anchor Bay have indicated they won't be re-releasing Season 1 with the commentary (Click here to read the reply from Anchor Bay)

Sharon Delaney has responded to this by saying: that she was told by Rob that Lucy, Renee & Rob DID record the commentary. So at this point it's a wait and see job about whether we will get to see/hear the commentaries for the three episodes of Season 1:

Callisto -- Lucy, Renee, Rob
Is There A Doctor -- Lucy, Renee, Rob

What's interesting to note is that Anchor Bay is the distributer rather than the company creating these DVDs.

Lucy and Renee: The Early Years videotapes are in house and are being mailed in the next two days. When Lucy and Renee first began appearing at our conventions, I thought it might be a good idea to videotape them -- just to be able to look back and reminisce. So, I went out and bought a camcorder. Lucy and Renee thought it was a good idea, too. And they got copies of all their conventions. When we asked if we could release that footage, they agreed. It's time to share with all the fans that weren't able to attend at the time and the newcomers who missed out. The camera is a little shaky at times and the color isn't spot on, but the excitement is all there.

the XENA/HERCULES company has begun shipping the XENA Season Two DVD sets. This set is by the original people who were releasing the DVDs www.xenadvd.com - not Anchor Bay (I assume Anchor Bay will probably release season two at some point also). It does include an extra disc with director and actor bios, trivia, something called the "Xena Chronicles" and a photo gallery.

For Aussie Xenites - this is a real bargain
Just thought I better let you know that JB HIFI have a MASSIVE SPECIAL on the Xena DVD season box sets...I just went & bought season one parts one & two & season two parts one & two for $22.99 each.So I spent $91 for all four boxs..... They are usually $56.99 each box so thats A HUGE saving...

Anchor Bay will be releasing the Xena season by season boxed sets, I called them up and spoke with Mike Felsher, the Film Information Manager with Anchor Bay. He confirmed that the Anchor Bay DVD releases will be different than the Davis/Panzer mail order releases.

Unlike the D/P releases, these releases are sporting newly remastered transfers of each episode, including brand new Dolby 5.1 surround tracks and bonus features yet to be determined. He gave me an April 2003 release for Xena season 1 and a June 2003 release for Hercules season 1.

Anchor Bay is committed to presenting the show in the original aspect ratio. He said, in part: "We will be presenting the show in the original screen format whatever it may be. If the show legitimately went to 16x9 in future seasons, then that is what will be released to DVD."

Starting with Xena Season 3, episode 3 (since the first two eps of season 3 were shot during the tail end of season 2 and held over), this will be the first time ANYWHERE that the 16x9 widescreen version of the show will be available. (The worldwide sets put out by Universal in regions 2 and 4 were pan and scan, not widescreen.)

I just received a call from a sales lady at Davis/Panzer (the company that produces the XWP/HERCULES videos) and she informed me that season one of XWP on DVD is now available for ordering in the US - $99.95 + $9.95 for shipping, $109.90 total.  If you're interested you can contact her, Lena is her name, at 1-800-959-2480. I've just received my Season 6 DVD box 2 and FIN is not the same version as the one released on DVD in the US (Region 1 - aka The Director's Cut). You will need to purchase the FIN Director's Cut in order to have the revised FIN with the additional commentary by Lucy, Renee and Rob.

These DVD are Region 1 (US and Canada only) No date has been given for the release of these DVD but a possibility is Spring 2002.

I've noticed that the cover and sometimes the back cover pictures of the episodes don't match or they use the same picture on the front cover. Verrrry strange. As an example the following cover is for the upcoming release of Return of Callisto and Warrior Princess Tramp. I didn't know what Cecrops (The Lost Mariner) is there. I bet they will put Callisto or Princess Diana on the cover of the release for The Lost Mariner. Princess Diana has appeared twice already so I'm going for Callisto. <g>

Great news for Aussies!

Tim Smith the Products Manager for Universal Pictures Video has advised me of some   great news. February 7 is the launch date for the first 3 volumes of Season 1 in PAL format! Each month after there will be a further two volumes released.

In the first 3 Volumes, they have produced 'Collector Cards', which use the front sleeve graphic of each title. There are two eps per tape and the episodes will be released chronologically right from the start! They will be available from all leading video retailers, Target, Big W, Myer Grace Bros, K-Mart etc!

For international folk (particularly those from the U.S.), if they can source them from local online retailers, and they ship overseas - they can pick up each volume for about US$9 each (which is a bargain!). Each volume will retail for the RRP of $18.50.

EXCELLENT NEWS FOR AUSSIE XENITES!

I've been contacted by Tim Smith who is the Catalog Marketing Manager at Universal Pictures Video Australia with the following EXCITING News for Aussies.

February 2001 will see the huge Launch of Xena First Season Tapes.
They will available of two episodes per tape for the recommended retail price of $18.50 from all major retail outlets.

There will be three volumes in February and then 2 volumes per month every month until the end of the series!

Each tape will have 2 episode on them and from what I've been told there will be some extra Xena goodies with the tapes.
