Lucy and Julius at the Starship Hospital

Goodbye Warrior Princess, hello corporate queen 03 DECEMBER 2000 By DONNA CHISHOLM Say farewell to the Warrior Princess . . . and hello corporate queen. When Lucy Lawless puts her screen persona Xena to rest in May, she will be settling into a new role, using her brain more than her face. Lawless is joining the board of trustees of the Starship Foundation - becoming in effect a company director. In the unpaid role she will help to raise $3 million a year for the nearly 80,000 children from around the country treated annually at the Starship Hospital in Auckland.

Lucy plans on new baby once the show ends....Sunday Star Times - 22 October 2000
The Kiwi Actress, giving her first New Zealand interview since the announcement last week that Xena would end, said the show should have gone out with a bigger bang. "It deserves to go out on way more of a high" said Lawless, 32, from New York. Most American networks had moved Xena, filmed on Auckland's west coast, to time slots which were "all over the place" said Lawless.

Lucy has been lending her name and profile to some very worthwhile causes of late. She is in the forefront of the Safe and Sound Appeal and CARES and now Lucy is appearing on NZ TV in a commercial for Breast screening. The advert features Lucy walking toward the camera talking about her first screen test. She then takes off her shirt and you get to see her bra. The camera pans to the back and from shoulders up she takes her bra off. Now there's one way to get attention for a worthwhile cause. I'm sure one of the Kiwi Xenites will get some screengrabs of this advert <g>

12 September

As a follow up to yesterday's post about Xena being a role model to head up the anti child abuse call..Lucy said something that just confirmed why I'm a fan of this show and why I'm a fan of Lucy Lawless. The following article is from from the AFP Newswire - 11 September 2000 -

11 September

Lucy is in the news again -
In the NZ Sunday Star Times
The interview was conducted on the set of Xena and it shows a brilliant 9.5" square pic of her on the front then a smaller b&w shot inside of her on the set. There is also a pic of her on the banner headline of the front page of the paper. This is a great story and covers the public reaction to her "fronting" the campaign, the fundraising by her fans and her thoughts on child abuse as well as her own childhood. You can see the pics at Kiwi Attic - a transcript of the article will be up shortly. The paper or just the article can be purchased from http://kiwiattic.bizland.com/Xena/LLSS1092000.htm

And even more Lucy in the Media! The following is from Kiwi Attic -
Many thanks to Tracey for the information and the link

After Lucy's appearance on the front page of the Herald again today she has appeared on TV tonight ~ live! Lucy appeared on the Holmes Show which is a 1/2 hour current affairs show that airs straight after the main network news. The show is 1/2 an hour long and usually features 3 items. Lucy was on second and appeared for 10 minutes. Both Lucy and the Children's Commissioner Roger McLay appeared and were interviewed about the initiatives they are instigating to fight/prevent child abuse in New Zealand. Lucy has pledged her time and fame to help the cause and appears to be the front person for it. She was clearly emotional and is very passionate about this cause and was occasionally a little lost for words but often looked directly at the camera to appeal to the public. She said she met with the Starship foundation on Sunday and what was to have been a one hour meeting became a 6 hour meeting finalising all the details. The programme they have decided on was outlined on the show and they are appealing to the public to assist with donations in setting up the "one stop" child care centres. TV New Zealand have already pledged $1,000,000in air time to help promote the programme and the cause. Child abuse in New Zealand is a HUGE public issue at the moment and is filling the news and airwaves ( as well as the court system).
We taped the show and have uploaded some screen grabs for you to see.

What can you do to help? Plenty!
The following is from Mist from Sword and Staff

As many of you have read on the lists, over the past week New Zealand  newspapers have reported that Lucy was very much upset with reports of child  abuse that has cost the lives of several NZ children. Lucy offered her help to combat the problem, and she has now joined with others to raise funds to create New Zealand's first multi-agency CARES (Child and Adolescent Recovery, Empowerment and Safety) center near Starship Hospital.

In response to the requests I've received from fans to support Lucy's  efforts, S&S will be taking donations for the Starship Children's Hospital Foundation's Safe and Sound appeal to help support the creation of the CARES center. In addition, I will be posting a new auction up to the Sword and Staff site within the next few days. The proceeds from that auction will also go to support the CARES center. Anyone wishing to donate to this cause can send a check or money order payable in US $ (no postal money orders, please -- they cannot be cashed in  NZ) payable to: STARSHIP CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL and I'll forward the donations  down with a cover letter indicating that the donations should be used to support the CARES program.

More from Lucy's appearance at the Queer Awards. The following is from the Kiwi Attic - Many thanks to Tracey from Kiwi Attic for the information and the grabs

Described as "the Mount Albert mum behind the Xena costume" Lucy present an award during last nights televised "Queer of the year awards". The annual awards for the gay, lesbian, bisexual community. The award Lucy presented was for "straight alliance".... (won't give away who received it though........) The show was approx 1 hour long and Lucy appeared in the 3rd set. She spoke briefly about Xena then presented the award. She was on for approx 5 - 7 minutes. Her introducer was clearly overawed by her and the audience certainly made their appreciation known.

The following is from Sharon Delaney for Chakram #12

Here's a tidbit from Lucy's interview in Xena Newsletter #12 that I
thought you might enjoy:

The new "Lyre, Lyre" Xena CD soundtrack had just arrived in the office
and I was having fun listening to Lucy singing the Beatles' song "We Can
Work It Out," that had been cut from the episode. I'd had the tape on
when she called. Now I remembered reading in another magazine that Lucy
and some friends had put together a band.

"Kind of," she said shyly. "I write some music with friends."

"You're the lyricist?" I tiptoed a little further into this obviously
very personal territory.

"Yeah. Sometimes I come up with songs as well," she offered. "Or one of
the guys will flick me a music bed (rhythm track) he's written and ask me
to put a song on top of it. Then I'll work on both the melody and words."

Lucy was getting a bit more into this subject and came up with an idea
the fans might like, but I'll save that for the next issue.

15 June

lucysky.jpg (162779 bytes) This is the cover of the new Lucy Lawless Fan Club magazine from Sweden! The first issue will be out in September. The editor/president of the fan club is Micke Eriksson and if you are in Australia the magazine will be available through Stirling Entertainment.

Many thanks to Tracey Richardson from Kiwi Attic for the following infromation

Ok picture this - Lucy - heavily pregnant - in her Xena Battle dress - Yodelling! Yes you heard me trying to yodel. Well she did and it was part of a TV show that just aired

The TV show itself was an hour long and was titled Documentary New Zealand; In Search of the Lonesome Yodel. Its about the Top Twins discovering the history of Yodelling and along the way get some famous Kiwi's to giving it a go. One of these is Lucy. Sadly all the prepublication (TV and print) showed lots of Lucy yet when the show aired it was about 1 minute in length - the rest of the show was all about yodelling in Australia. I took 3 screen pics if your interested anyway.

new message from Lucy via Sharon Delaney

I sent Lucy and Rob a note on what fans all over the world had been doing in celebration of Julius' birth and she asked me to pass along the message below. Sharon

Time and again you guys have given generously to charities in our names, this time on behalf of Julius. Once again, you find us "gobsmacked" (Kiwi for speechless). I don't know how to thank you. I really don't. I guess I always feel so abundantly blessed in this life that I don't like to receive gifts, particularly as I know that every cent you all spend is money hard earned. The fact that you have stood by us through thick and thin and tuned in every week for 5 years is greater fidelity than many marriages enjoy. I cannot convey to you how deeply touched Rob and I are by your kindness in raising over $20,000 for charities around the world in the name of our son.

Whenever I feel myself on the horns of a moral dilemma, I try to remind myself of a maxim I wish to live by: "spread more Joy." It helps me choose the right direction even if, in the short term, it seems the least profitable option. This is what you have done.

At the risk of seeming repetitious, you inspire me.

God Bless HCNBs,

Yours truly,
Lucy Lawless

Trivia Time
The reference to HCNB in Lucy's letter to the fans stands for Hard Core Nut Ball. Lucy coined this phrase back in 1996.

At the recent interview with Lucy with Entertainment Tonight we found out that Julius is named after Lucy's mum Julie and Rob's grandfather - Julius.

Daisy picked out the name "Bay" because in Gaelic it means "Born on a Saturday" and Little JT was born on Saturday - 16 October.

It appears that little Julius is the spitting image of daddy and with red hair :-)

Lucy was filming the episode "Seeds of Faith" when ET was filming. It's the episode where Xena gives birth.

Lucy did not win the Best Actress award at the recent NZ TV Guide Awards. The award went to Angela Dotchin. I've seen Angela in a few things and I have to say..Lucy was robbed. Oh well maybe next year. XWP won best design and best drama series.

Lucy was mentioned on the National Enquirer TV show about underwater births - the segment dealt with how underwater births were much easier for mum and baby. It referred to Lucy's comments which were in the article The National Enquirer - Xena Mom Gives Birth Underwater

11 November 1999

The following is from Sylvia (Mainlander) from the FLAWLESS Mailing List

A quick overview. One of the host's of the show Petra goes and springs the surprise on the blind girl (ooops forgotten her name). She goes to Auckland Domain where she meets Lucy's stunt double who teaches her a few kicks and punches. She does very well. At this stage she doesn't know that she is meeting Lucy but after the exercise Petra springs on the next surprise. They are taken to the Studio where Lucy is filming. They go to the set where the day's filming is taking place and all allowed to watch. We of course don't see any of that <bg>. Next they are just standing outside and Lucy just wanders comes along. Has a long grey "dressing gown" thing on over her costume. You can just make out that is it blue. The girl is delighted of course but takes it well - a good talker so doesn't just stand there. Lucy lets her touch her face and hair (Petra asked her would she mind - Lucy's answer Of course not with a slight lift at the end - you know as to say - silly question - the girl is blind <bg>. Then who should come along but Renee in a Chinese looking long coat. They talk a bit and the girl finds out Renee's hair is short - the girl has long blond hair. After that the girl sings a song she has written for Lucy (her Mother didn't know she had done it - was crying at the end). Lucy was obviously very touched by it.

6 November 1999

The UK's Channel 4 TV has the following brief interview on its teletext page 118 today:

LAWLESS ONE STILL NOT FULFILLED

-------------------------------

She's kicked more butts than Rupert Murdoch and leads a fabulous life but Lucy Lawless still isn't truly happy. Lucy, 31, who plays Xena: Warrior Princess, is happily married and has two children, Julius and Daisy. "All of that doesn't fill me up. I guess I'm still waiting for my remaining purpose to drop out of the sky," she said. "I aimed for all this and now I'm here. So in a way it's a case of: what now?"

It might come as a surprise to her fans, but muscle girl Lucy Lawless is a frustrated Shakepearean actor. Talking about Xena: Warrior Princess she said: "Nothing goes on forever but when I do leave it will be a major transition. "I want to do Shakespeare. When I started out in acting, that's how I saw my career going, not swinging a sword and wearing a leather outfit. That's my next dream." -- Barbara

Lucy's best day in her career

"Let me tell you about the best day of my career! It happened, actually, in February of 1999 I believe. That was when I discovered that MTV had built this clay figure of me playing Xena and put me into one of those Celebrity Deathmatch shows that they do. You know what I'm talking about? It's this thing where they turn you into a clay character-Claymation or whatever--and they have an announcer and it's all just so absurd. You are fighting another celebrity in the ring, right? I got to go up against Calista Flockhart from Ally McBeal. That was just no contest. I wiped the floor with that poor woman. Let me just say that I wasn't offended at all. I was floored. Of all the little merchandising knockoffs and things that have featured Xena or just my face, this one really hit home for me. It was like--my God, I'm part of popular culture! There is an offensive clay image of me on TV, and I'm trying to tear apart an equally offensive clay likeness of another actress! It was all just so surreal to me. How can it ever get any better than that? I simply don't think it can.

6 October 1999

It's out!

It's a very sweet look at a New Zealand iconic experience - getting up at 3am to watch the live telecast of an international rugby match (All Blacks vs England).

A kiwi family (Murray Keene - Howar)(Fiona Samuels - one of NZ's premier playwrights!) invites a bunch of friends around to watch the big game, including famous ex-All Blacks and a certain kiwi actress.

She shakes hands, passes around lamingtons, gives her warcry, sings along with the song - all in all - cute. Anyone want me to get them a copy - email me as soon as possible. Idon't know how long they will be in the shops. The CD is $10, packing $1 and postage $5 = total of $16US. As usual you can send $$ or a cheque (check) to my friend Anne in Arizona.

Let me know.

The NZ Woman's Weekly - March 23, 1998 reported:

Xena star LUCY LAWLESS saved the day for real last week when she spotted an accident waiting to happen in the Auckland suburb of Remuera. Lucy was strolling down the street when a car passed her towing a trailer with a bed and mattress wobbling on top. As the huge mattress flew off the trailer and into the path of oncoming vehicles, Lucy swung into action like a real-life superhero, racing into the road and managing to heave the thing out of harm's way. This will probably turn out to be some on air stunt but I'll probably tune in anyway just to hear what actually happens

Live with Regis and Kathie Lee (air date 7/16/99 USA.) They had a quick Lucy mention. It was the "Top 20 Women Men Feel Strangely Attracted to". Number one was Hillary Clinton, in the top ten were Madeline Allbright, Janet Reno, Martha Stewart, and Oprah. Lucy Lawless tied for 10th (I don't remember with whom). Jeri Ryan was 18th, and Kathie Lee Gifford 19th.

Excerpt from the recent ET Online interview with Lucy

Lucy: I'll be taking a few weeks off after the baby is born.
Unfortunately, it will be a set kid for the first year or so of
its life. But babies are being raised through worse.

ET: Are you going to take any time off from the show?

Lucy: You can skate by without Xena for a few episodes, but since it is the big character, you can't really leave her out of the picture all together. So Lucy has to come to work! There are a lot of mortgages riding on this series.

From the Sword & Staff Website

Lucy Lawless and Rob Tapert are expecting their first child sometime in October. Xena fan groups from around the world have chosen the following charities to support in order to express their congratulations and good wishes to the Taperts. Please feel free to make a donation in any amount and send it to the Sword and Staff liaison for your country who will then forward it off to the charity along with the rest of the donations. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mistopholees at cassetta@ix.netcom.com

For several years, Lucy has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Starship Children's Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand and she recently spoke in support of the Foundation's proposed Children's Hospital TeleMedicine Network. thm_bittersonggraphic.jpg (10928 bytes)Yesterday I saw Peach and A Bitter Song - weird weird movies IMO. I've seen Peach before and I still thought it was weird. A Bitter Song was a total hoot. I was playing "translate it better than the caption writers" game. For those that don't know The Bitter Song is a Greek tale set in NZ with English subtitles. NEVER get a nurse like Lucy Lawless <vbg> This was Lucy's first acting job.

This is from Sharon Delaney:

I've been receiving a lot of messages and reading on the lists that folks would like to know how they can share their good wishes with Lucy and Rob on the upcoming birth of their child.

Lucy has long been a supporter of Starship Children's Hospital in New Zealand and they recently started a campaign to raise funds to develop a nationwide "telemedicine" network. At a news conference, Lucy stated that, "Fortunately, I live close enough where getting access to excellent care is not a huge problem." She said that this network would allow children in remote areas of New Zealand to be able to participate in the hospital's services. Lucy handed out Starbears to help raise the money.

Fans who wish to contribute to this cause by buying "virtual" Starbears, can send checks (in U.S. Funds) to:

Starship Hospital
P.O. Box 9389
Newmarket
Auckland 1031
New Zealand

If you send the Official Xena Fan Club a postcard listing your name and donation, we'll keep track of the amount raised and let everyone know how we're doing in the next issue of the newsletter and on the fan club web page at http://www.creationent.com

A Starbear costs $1.50 -- how many bears can we give birth to? :)

P.P.S. You do not have to be a member of the club to participate :)
P.P.S. Online folks can send emails instead of postcards.

I was reading the New Zealand Herald today and there is a small mention of Lucy its in the entertainment part . It has a pic of Jodie Rimmer and Michael Hurst its about the movie I'll Make You Happy. Reading down to about the middle of the article there is a paragraph saying how Rimmer enjoyed the contact with the "stellar cast" including, Jennifer Ward Lealand ( Desperate Remedies), Michael Hurst ( Hercules: The Legendary Journeys), Rena Owen ( One Were Warriors) and Lucy Lawless ( Xena Warrior Princess), who she describes as her mentors.

Message from Lucy (via Sharon Delaney -
The Official Xena Fan Club)
[MaryD:Apologies for spoiler info but the message is from Lucy and well I just couldn't stick it in the Season 5 Rumours page....blame Sharon for it <g> ]

Yep, we're having a baby. Which means, just between you and me, that at some stage Xena will have one coz you just can't hide these things forever -- and, no, we don't know the sex in either case.

Bless you all for your best wishes, generosity and support of late. Both Rob and I were greatly touched by the Sword & Staff web page's efforts which raised $5,085 for the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect -- that's $5,085 they could sure use.

Frankly, just the fact that someone got off their bums and did something to help another human being, unasked, is incredibly inspiring to me. Your support on many matters is greatly appreciated. The collective wisdom is not lost on us. You encourage me greatly.

Thank you. Lots of love,
Lucy

A Lucy reference: [thanks to Lucia from the info and the link]

"Marilyn Manson really likes the show a lot. Lucy Lawless (Xena the Warrior Princess) called in once and said that when she saw herself on birthday party hats and cups, she was flattered, but when she saw herself on "Celebrity Deathmatch," she knew she had made it. It's flattering, but in a weird way."
