The LA Stage Times has an article about Chicago The Musical (Hollywood Bowl). Here are the relevant parts regarding Lucy.
Lucy Lawless, best known for her role as Xena: Warrior Princess, is playing jailhouse matriarch “Mama” Morton. This fall, in a totally separate production, she will reprise the role of vampy Velma Kelly in her native New Zealand.
Lawless, who made her Broadway debut in the hit revival of Grease, says she’s not only excited about both productions and working with Shields, but she is equally excited to be playing a bad girl.
“Bad girls are fun,” says Lawless, referring to the female characters in the show. “More than being bad girls, they are kind of good-hearted, low-brow types. You know what I mean? There is a richness to these characters.”
Lawless says rehearsals have been eye-opening and some of the performances are exceptional. “I think this is going to be one of the most interesting Roxies ever,” she says of Simpson’s character. “Everyone is doing a good job. I’m in Broadway Boot Camp. I’m grateful for the challenge. The fact that I get to be here, I can’t believe the luck.”
Asked how she’s going to make the role her own, Lawless says she’s in the process of stripping away the Mamas she has seen over the years.
“To help in that process I’ve decided that when I’m singing, ‘When You’re Good to Mama,’ to myself I’ll actually be singing, ‘When You’re Good To Lucy.”
